Calathea rufibarba

Description:
Calathea rufibarba, commonly known as the Furry Feather Calathea, is a unique tropical houseplant recognized for its long, wavy leaves with a velvety texture. The deep green upper foliage contrasts beautifully with its rich burgundy undersides. Unlike other Calatheas with intricate leaf patterns, Calathea rufibarba stands out due to its soft, fuzzy leaves, which give it a distinctive, elegant appearance. This plant is pet-friendly, air-purifying, and thrives in warm, humid environments, making it an excellent addition to indoor spaces.

Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, using filtered or distilled water when possible. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as this can cause leaf curling and browning edges. Reduce watering in Winter when growth slows.

Fertilizer:
Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (Spring and Summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, as excess nutrients can cause leaf discolouration. Reduce feeding in Fall and Winter when the plant's growth slows.

Lighting:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may result in slower growth and duller foliage. An East- or North-facing window is ideal. If natural light is insufficient, a grow light can help maintain healthy growth.

Temperature:
Thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Keep it away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and sudden temperature fluctuations, as these can cause stress and leaf damage. Avoid temperatures below 60°F (16°C).

Humidity:
Requires high humidity (above 60%) to keep its foliage healthy and vibrant. If the air is too dry, mist the plant regularly, use a humidity tray, or place it near a humidifier. Dry air can cause leaf edges to crisp and brown. Maintaining stable humidity will promote lush, healthy growth.
